Purpose of music videos

  • important promotional tool for marketing performers and their music
  • help to create a star image or new performers
  • they adapt or develop the image of an established artists
  • used to interpret and anchor the meaning of the song and to entertain the audience
  • iconography indicates the genre of music and the style of the performer
 Different style of performers

  • performance style - close up of the performers direct address to engage the audience different outfits  ( no narrative)
  • Narrative - a story is created sometimes the lyrics dont match the visuals at all, sometimes the artists doesn't feature at all and there are just some actors enigma codes
  • Conceptual- there based around an idea or image
Conventions of music videos
  • videos may use linear narratives telling the story of the song or performance montages to draw attention to the song or the performers
  • videos may use contrasting settings and associated lighting location or studio or in performance urban or rural exotic or everyday to match the style of music and musicians image
  • videos may use contrasting camera work and editing to create a tone to match the song and the musicians
  • videos may use only music track as soundtrack or may add diegetic elements to help create a self-contained fictional world
  • mise-en-scene costumes facial expressions , propps
  • use of representations
